MILPITAS, CA — The Vector Control District plans to conduct overnight mosquito treatments this week after detecting West Nile virus in mosquitoes in four Santa Clara County ZIP codes.

The district has regularly deployed truck-mounted treatments since 2003 and takes targeted actions to reduce adult mosquito populations in areas where West Nile virus is found. The latest treatments are planned in the 95035, 95112, 95131 and 95134 ZIP codes located within San Jose and Milpitas.

Weather permitting, truck crews plan to start work at 10 p.m. Friday and wrap things up within two to four hours. Officials said it is normal to see an uptick in West Nile activity through the early fall, because mosquito populations thrive in warmer weather. The county's mosquito surveillance program is designed to detect diseases that include West Nile, St. Louis encephalitis and western equine encephalitis, which infected mosquitoes transmit.
