GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge: A Day of Unity and Inspiration

Empowering the Down Syndrome Community with Free Programs, Heartfelt Connections, and Unwavering Support

Saturday, the 4th annual GiGiFIT Acceptance Challenge at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, hosted by GiGi’s Playhouse Orange County, was an exhilarating celebration of community and acceptance. The event drew 150 enthusiastic participants, all sporting vibrant green GiGiFIT T-shirts, united in their mission to change perceptions of Down syndrome.

The morning began with a lively check-in and registration, where children ran and played with boundless energy, filling the air with laughter and excitement. This joyful spirit set the stage for a heartfelt welcome speech and an invigorating warm-up session. Participants of all ages danced, engaged in playful movements, and stretched, creating a vibrant and infectious atmosphere.

After warming up, the community embarked on a 1 Mile Inspirational Walk and a 5K Fun Run along the scenic Oso Creek Trail. "The energy was incredible, everyone coming together to show their full support and dedication to GiGi’s Playhouse," said Beatriz Nieto, Organizer of GiGiFit.

Cheering volunteers lined the trail, accompanied by brightly colored GiGiFIT-themed yard signs featuring photos of children with Down syndrome from fundraising teams raising $500 or more. The children were thrilled to spot their faces on the signs along the route, adding an extra layer of joy and pride to the event.

After the walk, the excitement peaked as families, friends, and volunteers cheered on children of all abilities in the Dash for Down Syndrome—a series of exhilarating sprint races. Every child earned a medal for their efforts, crossing the finish line with huge smiles and a sense of triumph as they celebrated their remarkable accomplishments.

The event concluded with the announcement of the top fundraising teams. Team Kelly Anne McPhee secured first place, raising $2,444 and winning 4 Angels Diamond Club Tickets and a framed photo of their loved one with Down syndrome inside the Playhouse. Team Zoe took second place with $2,114, earning 6 Knott’s Berry Farm day tickets and a burger meal gift card. Bailey's Bunch rounded out the top three with $905 raised, winning a party at the OC GiGi’s Playhouse.

Since opening in November 2022, GiGi’s Playhouse Orange County has been a beacon of support and positivity for the local Down syndrome community, offering entirely free programs and events. "Parents often share that their biggest hope is for their child to make a friend," says Suzanne Scott, GiGi's Playhouse OC Site Manager. GiGi’s Playhouse is fulfilling these hopes, fostering life-changing friendships, and raising awareness through national campaigns, educational programs, and empowerment initiatives, making a profound impact both locally and beyond.
