Missing Man Found Safe, Dry After Overnight Search

A missing Casta Del Sol man was found safe and dry in Aliso Viejo and reunited with family Saturday morning following an emergency search, officials announced Monday.

The 67-year-old man (named Robert "Bob" Bohn according to Patch commenter Dave Hawes) had left home on a walk with two dogs Friday afternoon, said Orange County Sheriff's Department Administrative Sgt. William McGovern.

Police were called around 4:30 p.m. Friday when the man failed to return home. Sheriffs employed two bloodhound teams, a helicopter, 10 patrol cars and a search and rescue team of 22 volunteer reserve deputies to help find him. A command post was set up at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Swim Complex.

The search was called off at 4 a.m. to give rescuers time to rest. It resumed at 8 a.m., but at 8:07, police were called about a man "acting strangely" in Aliso Viejo. It was their missing man.

The man was found with one dog and "did not appear to be injured," McGovern said.

"He didn't even appear to be wet even though it rained that day," he said.

Although the man's dog was missing Saturday, the dog is microchipped and will be identifiable if it is picked up, McGovern said. 

"Everything worked out," he said. "People thought something was out of sorts, they called police, and it worked out."

Patch readers noticed the helicopter using a loud speaker to call for the man. They asked how they could help in the rescue.

"If they're distracted by the helicopters, they shouldn't jump in," McGovern said. "We're not going to ask for people to come out and track things down. We have huge amounts of resources with rescue and bloodhounds."
