More Cops in Mission Viejo After Newtown Massacre, Mall Shooting

The Friday mass-shooting in Connecticut that left 26 dead, followed by a Fashion Island mall shooting in Newport Beach Saturday, has Mission Viejo increasing police enforcement.

Throughout the holiday rush, two additional police deputies will patrol The Shops at Mission Viejo, said city spokeswoman Kelly Tokarski.

The city's five school police officers have "reviewed emergency and lock-down procedures" with school staff, Tokarski said.

The extra protection comes after a man fired 40-50 rounds of ammunition at Fashion Island Saturday.

These shootings are "difficult to prevent," Chief of Police Services Chris Wilson said.

But more police on location will allow the department to act faster in an emergency, Wilson said. He said it may also deter someone else set on violence.
