City's Flags at Half-Staff to Honor Fallen Police Officers
The city is commemorating Peace Officers Memorial Day on Tuesday, May 15.

The city's flags are flying at half-staff Tuesday to commemorate Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national day of remembrance established by presidential proclamation that honors police who've lost their lives in the line of duty.
"This week, we pay tribute to the thousands of men and women who serve us with extraordinary bravery, and we remember the heroes who have laid down their lives in pursuit of a safer, more just society," said President Barack Obama in a presidential proclamation.
The Officer Down Memorial Page lists Officer Scott Vernon Smith as lost in the line of duty while with the in 1939. Smith "sacrificed his life to save two innocent children who darted out in front of him as he was driving his police motorcycle," according to a police officer who posted on that page.
