Monrovia's Best Taco: Enrique's Cochinita Pibil

Our lunch eating expert explains why the marinated pork taco at Enrique's is his absolute favorite.

Being born and raised in Southern California exposes you to a taco or two, and I've devoured thousands in my lifetime. So in this first column about the best lunch dishes in Monrovia, the taco was a natural starting point.

I grew up in Pomona and developed a deep and abiding love for Mexican food (shout out to Los Jarritos II!). I must admit I wasn't impressed with the taco selection when I first arrived in Monrovia more than a year ago. That is, until I tried the Cochinita Pibil taco at .

Also called the Taco de Cochinita on the menu, this taco is loaded with tender, marinated pork and topped with pickled onions. I usually drench tacos in as much salsa as the tortillas will hold, but the flavorful pork in the Cochinita is already stewed in a deliciously salty Yucatan-style sauce and can stand alone.

The tacos are small so I recommend ordering at least four, and their other options are all quite good too. My vegetarian brother recommends the potato taco--potatoes with poblano chilies, mexican cheese, guacamole and pickled onions--and I always get at least one of those as well.

See you on Taco Tuesday!
