Fire Department Warns of Fireworks Danger
County residents caught using fireworks where unlawful could be fined up to $1,000 and/or receive a jail term of up to a year.

The Ventura County Fire Department has issued a statement reminding residents that fireworks are illegal in almost all cities and unincorporated areas of the county (safe and sane fireworks are allowed and will be available for purchase in Fillmore).
The department does, however, encourage residents to celebrate the Fourth of July by attending professional fireworks displays:
The Ventura County Fire Department reminds you that the safe – and legal – way to enjoy fireworks this Fourth of July is at a professional public display.
Fireworks of all kinds are illegal in the cities of Camarillo, Ventura, Moorpark, Santa Paula, Ojai, Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Anyone found in possession of fireworks or caught using them could be fined up to $1,000 and/or receive a jail term of up to a year, under International Fire Code Section 3301.1.3.
“The fire danger for our areas of natural vegetation is very high right now,” said Captain Mike Lindbery. “We have already had one major brush fire this year and several smaller ones. The risk that fireworks pose just can’t be ignored. Fireworks can easily ignite grass and light brush, and they can start a structure fire almost as easily. This a very serious matter to us and people need to know that anyone who starts a fire with fireworks – even accidentally – can be held liable for fire suppression costs and property damage costs.”
This Fourth of July, be safe and remember:
- Fireworks are illegal in all areas served by the Ventura County Fire Department.
- Any firework that is launched into the air (except by a professional pyrotechnician) is illegal – everywhere in Ventura County.
- Attend a professional fireworks display.
- Never give fireworks or sparklers to children.
- Teach children that fireworks are dangerous, explosive devices.
- Remember to stop, drop and roll if your clothes catch on fire.
