Local Firefighters Think Pink

Ventura County firefighters, dispatchers, mechanics, hand crew members and chief officers have all been authorized to wear pink T-shirts to help raise cancer awareness. 

“A recent study by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network showed that firefighters are more than twice as likely to contract cancer during their lifetime than a member of the public,” said Captain Steve Kaufmann, vice-president of the Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association. “We want to bring attention to all of the lives affected by cancer, but the effort also allows us to reflect on members of our own department who were lost to cancer.” 

For the past four years, many fire departments across the United States have worn pink t-shirts in October. This is the first year for the Ventura County Fire Department. 

“As firefighters, we are called to help cancer patients every day,” said Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen, “... cancer has affected someone in many of our own families. The pink t-shirts are a way to show that cancer is another threat firefighters are willing to face head-on.” 

The public is invited to join in the fight against cancer. Pink fire department t-shirts can be purchased at the VCPFA office and online at Ventura County Professional Firefighters Association, 3251 Corte Malpaso, Suite 501 B/C, Camarillo, CA 93010.
