Inmate At Murrieta Jail Dies In Custody

An inmate was found unresponsive early Saturday morning at Cois Byrd Detention Center, authorities said.

MURRIETA, CA — An inmate at a Riverside County jail was found dead on Saturday, authorities said.

The inmate at the Cois Byrd Detention Center was found unresponsive and pronounced dead around 1 a.m., according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Custody staff and jail medical staff, along with Cal-Fire personnel, reportedly administered life-saving measures, which were unsuccessful. There were no signs of foul play, officials said.

The inmate's identity was not released, pending notification of next of kin.

The sheriff's department has launched an investigation into the death, and the cause of the death will be determined by the Riverside County coroner's office. Anyone who might have information about the death was encouraged to call Investigator Williams at 951-696-3452.
