WINCHESTER, CA — The California Highway Patrol released details Monday about a weekend head-on crash in Winchester that killed a Perris woman and seriously injured a Murrieta man.

The fatal wreck was reported shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday on Washington Street, just west of state Route 79.

A 52-year-old Bloomington woman behind the wheel of a 2020 Nissan Armada was heading west at about 50 mph, when she crossed over double-painted yellow lines into the eastbound lane in order to pass slower traffic, according to a preliminary report from the California Highway Patrol.

In doing so, the woman was in the path of an eastbound 2020 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 49-year-old Hemet man. He tried to avoid the Nissan but the two smashed head on and the impact sent both vehicles down a dirt embankment, the CHP report stated.

Despite the Jeep rolling over, there were no reports of injuries to the Hemet man.

The Nissan driver also suffered minor injuries.

All of the injured were transported to Wildomar's Southwest Healthcare Inland Valley Hospital for treatment, the CHP reported. An update on their condition was unavailable.

No arrests were announced.

The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
