MURRIETA, CA—There's been an increase in catalytic converter thefts all over southern California and Murrieta hasn't been immune to this particular crime, according to the Murrieta Police Department.

According to the Murrieta Police Department, it can take only two minutes for a thief to remove a catalytic converter.

Some vehicles are more of a target than others, according to Murrieta police. Vehicles often targeted for their catalytic converters include small cars like the Toyota Prius, since it is light and easily lifted by a jack.
Large trucks and motor homes are also an easy target, since they are higher off the ground and allow for easy access under the vehicle.

What can you do to prevent this type of theft?
- Park your car in your garage.
- If you can't park in the garage, park in a well lit, well seen area.
- Install security cameras in the area you normally park you car.
- Adjust the alarm on your car to activate from vibrations. They use a saw to cut out the catalytic converter so those vibrations would activate your alarm.
- Install a catalytic converter specific security device.
