NID receives $615,000 CAL FIRE grant to protect critical water infrastructure from wildfire (yubanet.com) — Nevada City’s main water supply is getting added wildfire protection thanks to a $615,000 CAL FIRE grant for fuel reduction along the South Yuba Canal east of town. The work will help safeguard the wooden flume that delivers drinking and irrigation water, supports hydroelectric power, and underpins services for Nevada City and neighboring communities.

2. County Free Spay Neuter Program Very Popular (knco.com) — Nevada County’s free spay and neuter program is drawing heavy demand, with today’s clinic fully booked and appointments already filling for January 27 and February 24. Funded with $75,000 in pilot money, the effort has already covered over 100 pets and will continue into next year, while the county resumes direct shelter operations and plans a new facility that Nevada City residents will rely on.

3. SYRCL's Wild & Scenic Film Festival Unveils 2026 Official Selections (yubanet.com) — Nevada City will again co-host SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival February 19–23, 2026, bringing more than 130 environmental and adventure films plus workshops and community events to town. Screenings and activities will be split between Nevada City and Grass Valley, with additional virtual options through February 28. Passes are already on sale for locals who want to plan ahead.

4. Remains found along Nevada County hiking trail in March ID'd as 55-year-old man (sacbee.com) — Authorities have identified remains found in March near a South Yuba River trail in Nevada City as 55-year-old Aaran Sloan Taylor, and say his death does not appear suspicious. Nevada County officials are still trying to locate any of Taylor’s relatives and are asking residents for help connecting them with next of kin.
