Silliman Aquatic Center's Re-Opening Slated for May

The re-opening of Newark’s aquatic center may come later than planned.

City officials anticipate that the Silliman Aquatic Center will open back up to the general public in late May.

The facility was closed just after Labor Day last year so that repairs could be made to the center’s ceiling and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, according to city officials.

Originally, the re-opening was estimated for April, but City of Newark Recreational Director told Patch that the tentative re-opening date is now May 24. 

“However, this is contingent on the repairs being completed by the end of April thus allowing enough time to fill the pools, turn on the pumps (and hope for no leaks or repairs needed), train staff and move our administrative staff back to the closed side of the center,” Zehnder said.  “Delays could still occur so the Friday, May 24 date is tentative for now.”

City officials have said the project will include replacing paint that peeled off the center’s ceiling and that the pool area’s HVAC system will be redesigned in order to make it more efficient.

The cost of the project will be covered by a $3.2 million settlement reached between the City of Newark and the original contractors who built the Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center, City Manager John Becker has said.
