It's Not Too Late To Run For A Seat On Newark City Council
Mayor Nagy announced he would not seek reelection earlier this year.
NEWARK, CA — Two city council seats and the mayor's office are up for grabs in the city of Newark's municipal election Nov. 8, 2022, and those hoping to secure a spot on the ballot now have until Wednesday, Aug. 17 to declare their intention to run for office.
The extension by the city comes after incumbents for those offices failed to file nomination petitions during the city’s nomination period that began July 18 and ended Aug. 12, the city clerk’s office said in a news release.
According to Newark City Clerk, Sheila Harrington, Mayor Alan Nagy announced earlier this year he would not seek reelection and Councilmember Michael Hannon has filed paperwork to run for Mayor.

“Councilmember Mike Bucci did file paperwork for his seat,” Harrington said.
“The filing period for candidates, other than incumbent candidates for the office of Council Member and the office of Mayor in the City of Newark has been extended,” the release said.

Any resident of the city who is 18 years of age or older and a registered voter living in Newark is eligible to run for Mayor or for the City Council and can file a nomination petition by the new deadline during normal business hours, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Potential candidates need to obtain the signatures of at least 20, but not more than 30 registered voters in Newark and a $400 deposit the city said.
Those running for office will need to include a ballot designation and can submit a candidate statement no more than 200 words, according to election code. Candidate statements are published in the sample ballot and mailed to all registered voters, the city said. Candidates who choose not to submit a candidate statement, will be responsible for the cost of printing, translating and publishing the statement in the sample ballot.
