Crime Log: Five Arrested in Attempted Home Burglary; Transient Assaults Safeway Employee With Beer Can

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Jan. 10 and Jan. 14 as released by the Newark Police Department.
THURSDAY, JAN. 10
Woman arrested in clubbing incident

A 20-year-old Newark woman was arrested after an assault with a blunt object that occurred at around 11 p.m. on the 6000 block of Thornton Avenue. The victim was transported to a hospital for treatment and the suspect, identified as Jasmine Ann Minjarez, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Armed robbery at Public Storage
Two men with their faces covered held up the Public Storage located at 38290 Cedar Blvd. at gunpoint. The incident occurred at about 11:45 a.m. The suspects ordered the clerk to lie on the floor while one of them held a black semi-automatic pistol to her. The suspects made off with $100 before fleeing northbound on Cedar Boulevard in a black car.
The first suspect, who held the gun to the clerk, was described as a black male adult about 6-feet tall, 190 pounds, wearing a dark hoodie, dark pants and dark shoes. The second suspect was described as a black male adult about 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, and wearing a green or grey hoodie with white sleeves.
Prowler spotted on Spruce Street rooftop
A resident on the 3700 block of Spruce Street reported seeing a person on a rooftop at about 7:12 p.m. Once the person was spotted by the caller, he fled into the backyard of the home. Officers responded and set up a perimeter but were unable to locate him. Witnesses said they saw an older model gold Saturn occupied by two unknown males in the neighborhood earlier in the afternoon.
Homeless man assaults Safeway employee with beer can
A transient was arrested after throwing a beer can at a Safeway employee and cutting his face. The incident occurred at around 9:45 p.m. when the employee confronted the suspect for stealing a can of beer. That’s when the man threw the can at the employee. Officers responded to the scene and arrested the suspect on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
SATURDAY, JAN. 12
Man attempts to flee during warrant arrest
A man attempted to flee from officers during a warrant arrest near the area of Cedar Boulevard and Breton Drive. An officer attempted to contact the suspect at around 11:18 a.m. but the suspect fled on foot through several streets before giving up near the Chase Bank on Jarvis Avenue. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest as well as for a felony drug possession warrant.
Five arrested in attempted home burglary
Four men and a juvenile were arrested after trying to burglarize a home on Lobelia Drive. Officers responded to the area at around 10:10 p.m. after receiving reports of suspicious activity in the area. Officers confirmed a burglary was in process and located two getaway cars parked in front of the home. One suspect was in each of the waiting vehicles.
As officers were setting up a perimeter, both getaway cars tried to speed off simultaneously. At the same time, a suspect exited the home and tried to hop over a backyard fence.
One of the drivers attempted to run over an officer with his car as he fled the area. Both drivers were eventually stopped shortly after. The suspect who fled on foot was confronted by an officer and eventually arrested. The other suspects were taken into custody as they exited the home. One of the suspects was caught by a police K-9 after attempting to flee.
Inside the home, officers found a large gun safe that the suspects had tried to open using sledgehammers and crowbars.
Among those arrested on burglary charges were 24-year-old Sigredo Reyes of Fremont, 21-year-old Lorenzo Bridges of San Lorenzo, 22-year-old Juan Garcia of Hayward and 20-year-old Jorge Gonzalez of East Palo Alto.
Garcia, the driver who attempted to run over an officer, was also arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Gonzalez, the other getaway driver, was also arrested on suspicion on possession of cocaine.
The juvenile suspect was not named.
MONDAY, JAN. 14
Burglars steal $100, bottle of alcohol from liquor store
An unknown suspect smashed a window with a dumbbell at TJ Liquors, located at 39978 Cedar Blvd., and made off with $100 in cash and a bottle of alcohol. The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. The suspect was last scene running on foot westbound on Stevenson Boulevard.
