Crime Log: Man Shot While Sitting in Parked Car; Man Arrested on Suspicion of Hit-and-Run

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Dec. 31 and Jan. 9 as released by the Newark Police Department. 

MONDAY, DEC. 31

Home burglary on Chelsea Drive

Officers investigated a home burglary around midnight early Monday morning on the 36100 block of Chelsea Drive. Suspects forced their way through a side garage door. The loss was unknown.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 2

Man arrested for hit-and-run

A 23-year-old Newark man was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving while under the influence of alcohol.

FRIDAY, JAN. 4

Home burglaries:

A home on the 36000 block of Tudor Place was ransacked after suspect(s) entered through a side door.

A home on the 5700 block of Robertson Avenue was also trashed after burglars pried open a bathroom window.

SATURDAY, JAN. 5

Attempted burglary

A burglar tried to break into a home on the 35000 block of Argonne Street. The suspect removed screens from several windows but wasn’t able to get inside the home.

SUNDAY, JAN. 6

Domestic battery in Macy’s parking lot

Officers responded to the Macy’s Parking lot around 11 a.m. to investigate a reported domestic battery. Authorities eventually arrested a 22-year-old suspect who was booked into Fremont Jail.

Attempted burglary

Unknown suspects tried to break into a home on Cypress Point Drive between 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. The suspects tried to break a kitchen window.

MONDAY, JAN. 7

Man shot while sitting in car on Olive Street

A 28-year-old man was wounded in a shooting on the 37000 block Olive Street early Monday evening, police said. Officers responded to a report of a man being shot while sitting in a parked car at 6:20 p.m. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital. In what may be a related development, a person related to the shooting victim was subjected to a road rage incident five hours later.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 9

Hit-and-run

A victim on the 6200 block of Zulmida Ave. reported a hit-and-run at around 7 p.m. The victim said that a newer model Mercedes SUV hit his car with was parked in front of his home and then fled. Officers searched the area but could not locate a suspect vehicle.
