Update: Police Say Federal Agent Is In 'Serious' Condition

The suspect in Tuesday's shooting is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Thursday.

Authorities have determined the relationship between a wounded federal agent and the man arrested on suspicion of shooting him, but they did not elaborate on what that relationship is.

Newark Detective Sgt. Mike Carroll refused to comment on whether the suspect knew the federal agent who was early Tuesday morning and did not elaborate further.

Newark Cmdr. Tom Milner said Wednesday afternoon that the victim started with serious injuries and remains in serious condition.

"Obviously, it's a traumatic event," Milner said.

Dennis Bagwell, 61, of Piedmont was arrested in Union City Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder. He is scheduled to be arraigned at the Fremont Hall of Justice at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Authorities have said Bagwell has no history of criminal activity.

The shooting occurred in front of the victim’s one-story home just before 5:50 a.m. Tuesday on the 7700 block of Mayhews Landing.

Police arrived and found the victim, a 61-year-old Newark man, suffering from at least one gunshot wound. He was transported to Eden Medical Center, but his medical condition was not released, at the request of his family.

The victim has not been identified, but authorities confirmed he is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent who worked out of San Francisco International Airport.

Multiple media reports have showed federal agents searching an Oakland apartment complex on Linda Avenue, where Bagwell is said to be a property manager and resident, in connection to the investigation.

Carroll did confirm Wednesday that a Tuesday morning police raid on Arbeau Drive, which is about a mile away from Mayhews Landing, was not related to the shooting.

According to a report by The Argus, authorities did not release details about the nature of the Arbeau Drive raids.

The investigation is ongoing and Carroll said Newark police remains to be the lead agency in the investigation.

Bagwell is being held on no bail at Santa Rita Jail.
