NUSD Board To Appoint Bond Oversight Committee Members

An applicant for the committee will be interviewed at 6 p.m. Regular session will begin at 7 p.m.

Tonight the  will interview the last of nine candidates who have applied to sit on the , a group that will implement a school bond measure that was passed by Newark voters in November.

The interview will begin at 6 p.m. at the , 5715 Musick Ave. and the appointment of the committee members is scheduled to take place during the board's regular meeting, which starts at 7 p.m.

The establishment of the Citizens’ Oversight Committee is required by state law.

A second and final read of the bond oversight committee's bylaws will also be discussed and be put up for a vote at the board meeting. 

Some of the duties, as outlined by the bylaws, include:

  • Receiving and reviewing copies of the annual performance audits;
  • Inspecting school sites to ensure bond revenues are spent in correctly;
  • Receiving and reviewing copies of deferred maintenance proposals or plans; and
  • Reviewing efforts of the district to maximize bond revenues by implementing cost-saving measures (Click here to download the PDF that outlines the bylaws).

Measure G, s cast, is a $63 million bond that property owners will have to pay toward facilities upgrades throughout the Newark Unified School District.

The monies from the bond will go toward updating classrooms, libraries and science labs and refurbishing schools to meet earthquake and fire safety standards.

Also on the board's agenda are:

  • A staff report about Gov. Jerry Brown's proposed 2012-13 budget.
  • A staff report on the corrective actions and technical assistance providers of the district's Local Educational Agency Program Improvement Year 3.
  • A vote on the determination of which legal firm will provide services to the district in relation to construction from bond projects.
