School Board To Discuss 2012-13 Budget Updates

The Newark Memorial Unified Board of Education will discuss budget updates and potential layoffs of certificated staff for the 2012-13 school year at its meeting tonight.
Senior Director of Human Resources Tim Erwin will present to the five-member board the district’s layoff process of certificated staff before the board discusses budget updates and planned layoffs of certificated staff for next school year.
Part of the process includes consideration of certified staff member’s seniority date, the decision to reduce or eliminate certain types of services and layoff notifications and hearings, according to district documents within the agenda.

Preliminary notices of layoffs must be delivered by March 15.
Last May, the board voted to eliminate 23 full-time equivalent positions for the 2011-12 school year – which meant the reduction of positions for 27 school employees.

At its Jan. 31 school board meeting, Chief Business Official Elaine Nielsen noted that the school budget is “so unpredictable.”
