Firefighters Wear Pink to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Newport Beach Fire Department personnel wear pink shirts under their uniforms throughout October to raise awareness of breast cancer.

To help raise awareness for breast cancer, the second leading cause of death among women, the Newport Beach Fire Department is adding a hint of pink to its uniforms.

Throughout October NBFD personnel will wear bright pink t-shirts under the normal uniform to voice the department's commitment to the education and early detection of breast cancer, according to a news release.

The t-shirts display a fire hose on the back that has been fashioned into a pink ribbon, with the words “We support the fight against breast cancer.”

"At first glance, the bright colors may appear to offset our professional uniform’s image, but it serves as an excellent reminder of the importance of breast cancer education," Capt. Mike Liberto said in a released statement.

Statistics show one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

The NBFD encourages everyone to wear pink in October to support breast cancer awareness.
