Fish Tank Causes Fire in Newport Coast Home

A fish tank inside a home on Coral Reef catches fire, but the residents escape without injuries.

A fish tank sparked a fire at a Newport Coast home Tuesday afternoon, a fire official reported.

At about 4:40 p.m. a fire broke out at 36 Coral Reef. Residents in the two story home found moderate amounts of smoke and called 911, according to Newport Beach Fire Capt. Brett Sutherland.

"Arriving units found an active fire around a saltwater fish tank," Sutherland said in a released statement. "[The] fire was contained to a small area around the fish tank."

Sutherland said the fire was caused by an electrical failure with the fish tank. The blaze cause about $5,000 in damages.
