Man Dies After Car Slams Telephone Pole In Possible DUI Crash: Police

One man was arrested and another was pronounced dead as a result of the crash in Costa Mesa, authorities said.

COSTA MESA, CA — A man sitting in the passenger's seat of a vehicle died Sunday after the car he was riding in crashed into a pole, authorities said.

The crash was reported just before 3 a.m. Sunday, when Newport Beach police officers were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle suspect who drove into Costa Mesa, the Costa Mesa Police Department said.

The speeding driver then crashed into an Edison power pole at the intersection of Santa Ana Avenue and 22nd Street, near the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway.

The driver and a back-seat passenger were transported to a local hospital. The front-seat passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene. That person's identity was withheld pending next of kin notification.

The driver was identified as Anthony Samayoa, a 20-year-old resident of Carson. Samayoa was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony DUI, felony evasion and attempted vehicle theft.
