City Council Approves New CDM Stop Sign

City crews will install a stop sign and striping at Hazel Drive and Poppy Avenue.

The Newport Beach City Council has approved the installation of a stop sign at an intersection in Corona del Mar where drivers have limited vision.

Tuesday's decision follows a staff recommendation that suggests a stop sign and striping be installed on Hazel Drive and Poppy Avenue. According to a staff report, some residents told city officials they were concerned about the safety of the intersection.

Bryan Loo, the city's junior civil engineer, said after careful review it was determined the intersection will benefit from a stop sign.

"Installation of a stop sign at this location will better control vehicular right-of-way by requiring vehicles approaching the intersection on Hazel Drive to stop prior to turning onto Poppy Avenue," Loo said in the written staff report.

In addition, Loo said there is also an increase in seasonal pedestrian activity along Poppy Avenue sidewalks which further warrants the need for the stop sign.

The installation cost for the stop sign and striping will be under $1,000.
