Newport Beach RACES Field Day Held June 25

The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service Field Day event will take place at Coastal Peak Park.

From a Newport Beach Patch reader:

The Newport Beach RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service) annual Field Day is going to be held on Saturday, June 25th, at Coastal Peak Park, from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Newport Beach RACES is organized to provide backup and supplementary communication to the Police Department in an emergency or disaster.

The annual Field Day is held as a part of the ARRL (American Radio Relay League) nationwide exercise, as an opportunity for “ham” radio operators to exercise their skills in “abnormal situations in less than ideal situations.” The RACES members use their radios to briefly contact other operators across the country and around the world, building up as many contacts as possible.

The Newport Beach RACES group will set up the Newport Beach Emergency Radio trailer, with multiple radios and external antennas, in the cul-de-sac at the end of Ridge Park Road at the Park. Not only will they “work the radios” while they are there, but they invite others to visit, watch the operations, and learn about radio communications.
