OC Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Newport Carjacking; Fleeing Police

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A 26-year-old felon accused of carjacking two people at gunpoint was arrested on Wednesday after he was chased by police through Newport Beach, authorities said.

Alfredo M. Hopgood of Costa Mesa led police on a chase before he barricaded himself in a partially built home in the Dover Shores neighborhood, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.

Police were deployed at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a carjacking near Fashion Island, police said. Hopgood was accused of taking one vehicle, and when it became disabled after crashing, he carjacked another vehicle at gunpoint, according to police and the Daily Pilot.

Police followed the stolen black Jeep Cherokee for several miles until a suspect pulled over on Santiago Drive in the Dover Shores neighborhood, exited the car and ran into a house.

Officers swarmed the area on foot as helicopters from the Orange County Sheriff's Department and Anaheim Police Department surveyed the area overhead, the Pilot reported.

Eventually, Hopgood was discovered in the backyard at 8:50 p.m. within a perimeter police established. He surrendered without incident, police said.

He was booked on suspicion of robbery, carjacking, felon in possession of a firearm, ammunition and a large capacity magazine as well as assault with a deadly weapon, recklessly evading police, violating parole and carrying a gun in a public place, according to Newport Beach police. He was being held without bail, according to jail records.
