Sewage Spill Closes Section of Newport Bay

The waters at Bayside Drive from the Balboa Island Bridge to Harbor Patrol Beach, and the East Bay Front of Balboa Island is closed due to a sewage spill.

Health officials issued a water closure today for a section of Newport Bay following a sewage spill, the Orange County Health Care Agency’s Ocean Water Protection Program reported.

Today at 7:45 a.m., an approximately 2,800 gallon sewage spill caused by a line break closed the bay water area at Bayside Drive from the Balboa Island Bridge at Marine Avenue, to Harbor Patrol Beach and the East Bay Front of Balboa Island, according to county health spokeswoman Tricia Landquist.

Officials say it is unsafe to swim and dive in the area until further notice.
