Thief Targets Open House

Newport Beach police tell residents and real estate agents to be vigilant when hosting an open house.

A homeowner who recently hosted an open house was the victim of a theft, police reported today, so authorities are urging residents and real estate agents to be cautious.

In the incident last week, two watches were stolen when a woman was showing her home on Cape Danbury in Newport Beach, police reported.

Thieves often work in teams and try to distract real estate agents and homeowners, police said. The Newport Beach Police Department suggests these safety measure if you are planning an open house.

  •  Always secure your valuables before hosting an open house.
  •  If you are hosting your own open house, have a second person to assist you.  One person should remain at the front of the house to greet prospective buyers; the other should roam through the house as needed.
  • When prospective buyers arrive, jot down their vehicle descriptions, license numbers and physical descriptions.
  • Open all the blinds and curtains, and turn on all lights.
  • If you are showing your home, always walk behind the prospective buyer.
  • Tell your neighbors you are holding an open house.
  • Don’t forget! Place your purse in a secure location.
