Woman Sentenced to Jail for Attacking Liquor Store Clerk

Teresa Aguayo was charged with attempted murder last year, but that charge and a sentencing enhancement of using a dangerous weapon were dropped in a plea bargain Aug. 29, according to court records.

Aguayo pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon likely to produce great bodily injury, a felony, and two counts of battery on a peace officer and a count of resisting arrest, all misdemeanors. She was given credit for 1,029 days served in custody and released from jail the same day as her plea.

In April 2012, Aguayo went to the California Stop at 600 W. 19th St. and tried to buy a single bottle of Blue Moon beer that she took from a six-pack, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Phil Myers said when she was arrested.

The clerk told the woman she could not sell her a single bottle.

Aguayo left the store, returned a short time later and again tried to persuade the clerk to sell her a single beer, Myers said.

When the clerk again declined, Aguayo started hurling things, such as small bottles of energy drinks, at the clerk, prompting her to pull out a baseball bat and order her to leave the store, Myers said.

Aguayo took the bottle of beer, slammed it over the clerk's head, then wrestled her to the floor and took a towel or blanket and wrapped it around the victim's head so tightly that she nearly passed out, Myers said.

Aguayo also put the clerk in a headlock, poured rubbing alcohol in her mouth and spraying insect repellant in her face, Myers said.

The clerk was taken to a hospital to be checked out.
