Dutch School Celebrates Queen's Day

Happy Koninginnedag!

Children, parents and teachers at the Dutch School on Lauren Canyon Boulevard were celebrating Queen's Day or Koninginnedag on Saturday, marking the occasion by wearing orange (the color associated with their royal family), playing games like blik gooien (hitting tin cans with a rolled up ball of socks) and eating traditional Dutch food like poffertjes (silver-dollar pancakes), satay and hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles.)

The Dutch School holds language and culture lessons in the every Saturday for three hours.  Parents contribute toward tuition, but the school is also sponsored by the Dutch government. The idea being that, if the children chose to return to Holland, they will be able to hit the ground running with their knowledge of Dutch language and culture. If they stay in the United States, at least they'll know their poffertjes from their hagelslag.
