North Hollywood High Science Bowl Team Departs For D.C.

Five-member student teams from North Hollywood High School, Woodbridge High School, Irvine, and Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies leave today for Washington, D.C. to represent the Los Angeles area at the 22nd Annual U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl competition.

Students are set to compete in a field of 113 regional championship teams from more than 49 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.  The competition follows a game-show format featuring complex math, science and technology questions.

North Hollywood High School is the champion of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl regional competition that includes public, private and parochial schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District boundaries.  North Hollywood will compete at the National Science Bowl for the 14th time; winning a national title in 2001 and capturing three second place and one third, fourth and fifth place trophies.

Los Angeles area schools have fared well in past national competitions, winning five titles over the past 16 years. 

Woodbridge High School, champion of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) regional competition will represent Southern California areas outside of LAUSD.  

The Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) team will compete in the national middle school competition following its first place finish at  California State University, Los Angeles regional competition.  LACES will be competing in a field of 44 teams. In addition, the middle school teams will participate in a second competition to design, build and race model battery-powered electric cars.

The National Science Bowl is the nation's largest high school science competition. Since the program began in 1991, about 200,000 high school and middle school students and their teachers have participated.  This year 14,000 students competed in regional competitions, 10,000 at the high school level and 4,000 at the middle school level.

Prizes include a science-based trip to Alaska for the winning high school team. Other awards include trophies, plaques, scientific calculators and monetary awards of $500 and $1000 for school science supplies. 

Science Bowl is a proud LADWP tradition and an example of the Department's commitment to the Los Angeles educational community. Additional LADWP education programs include the Adopt-A-School program, an electric safety program, Youth Service Academy, and on-line lesson materials.  Also over the years several classroom lesson development projects have been coordinated with LAUSD on such topics as Renewable Energy and Water Quality Chemistry. For further information on LADWP Education Programs, click here.
