Unhealthy Air Quality Throughout L.A. Amid Heat Wave, Fires

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CA — Air quality will be unhealthy in much of Los Angeles County Tuesday as smoke from various fires and the heat wave continue to pound the area. The San Fernando Valley will be hit especially hard, as AQMD forecasts that air throughout the region will be highly polluted.

The AQMD also forecasts unhealthy air for all individuals in Pomona and Walnut Valley, Santa Clarita Valley and West San Gabriel Valley. Air in the East San Gabriel Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains, where the Azusa fire is located, is expected to be very unhealthy.

Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy for only sensitive individuals in the Antelope Valley.

Los Angeles County's health officer, Dr. Muntu Davis, advises people who live or work in those areas and have heart disease, asthma or other respiratory diseases to minimize outdoor activities.

Children who have sensitive conditions, including heart disease, asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases, should not participate in outdoor physical activity and should stay indoors as much as possible, he said.

Various cooling centers will remain open throughout the county for those searching for a break from the heat. Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center and Buena Vista Library will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

Area residents are advised to call ahead in advance, as space will be limited to maintain social distancing.
