Locals Protest ICE Killing With Procession To Honor Victim In Marin County

MARIN COUNTY, CA — Over 1,500 Marin County residents walked in a mile-long procession Sunday morning throughout the grounds of the Marin Civic Center to honor the victims of killings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and to demand “ICE Out of Marin.”

A broad coalition of Marin groups organized the protest.

“We are here today to not only mourn Renee Good, but to also mourn the 33 others who have been killed by ICE or who have died in ICE detention," said Patty Hoyt, a local organizer. “But we are not only mourning the dead, we are expressing our outrage at the actions of ICE in communities all across the country. We are here to stand up for those ICE has abducted and for those ICE is terrorizing.”

The Marin County Board of Supervisors must use its full authority to end the Marin County Sheriff's Office's disgraceful collaboration with ICE, according to organizers.

The national "ICE Out For Good" Weekend of Action included the funeral procession for Marin, serving to demand accountability and underscore the human toll of ICE's operations.

ICE agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on Jan. 7. Good was driving an SUV when she stopped in the street. Ross drove past and then approached her vehicle on foot. As other agents closed in and tried to open her door, Good accelerated and turned away; Ross then fired three shots, killing her.

Mourners in Marin County gathered outside the County jail to pay their respects at a temporary memorial. Dressed in black, they left flowers and walked silently, holding signs displaying photos of people killed by ICE. The procession included six handmade caskets, accompanied by an audio recording that played the names of those killed by or who died while in ICE custody.
