VISTA, CA — A man was struck by a vehicle while running across a street outside of the crosswalk on Veterans Day in North San Diego County, authorities said.

The crash was reported shortly after 2 p.m. Monday in the 800 block of Sycamore Avenue in Vista, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. Callers reported that a man was struck by a vehicle and was down in the roadway.

The man was taken to a hospital and was in critical condition, sheriff's officials said.

"A preliminary investigation shows the adult male ran eastbound across Sycamore Avenue outside of the crosswalk and was stuck by a vehicle," the sheriff's office said in a news release. "The road was closed while the investigation was being conducted."

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, officials said.
