OCEANSIDE, CA — A gunshot apparently fired from a sidewalk into an Oceanside apartment early Tuesday killed a 26-year-old man inside the residence, authorities reported.

The shot crashed through a bedroom window at the residential complex in the 1800 block of College Boulevard at about 1 a.m., striking the victim in the head, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Several of the occupants of the apartment fled outside following the shooting, and two others took shelter in a bathroom, OPD spokesman Tom Bussey said.

Paramedics took the victim -- who did not live at the residence but was staying there with friends -- to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name was withheld pending family notification.

Police had no description of the shooter, who remained at large Tuesday afternoon. The motive for the shooting was unclear, and it was unknown if it was random gunfire or a targeted killing, Bussey said.
