Online Petition to Ban Plastic Grocery Bags Grows in Oceanside

Despite the more than 540 signatures on the petition, Wood said it is unlikely that a majority of the council would support the ban.

Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood said Wednesday that he is aware of an online petition asking the city to ban plastic grocery bags, but doesn't see the city making a change anytime soon.

Despite the more than 540 signatures on the petition, Wood said it is unlikely that a majority of the council would support the ban, according to U-T San Diego.

“I think it’s a good idea,” Wood said. “But it would be a waste of time to even bring it up.”

The petition was started more than a month ago by an Oceanside resident on change.org.  It asks that the city council "help protect our local beach environment” by banning the bags.

More than 70 municipalities across California have already supported the ban, including Solana Beach – the first in San Diego County to do so – which instituted it last year.

Councilmembers Jerry Kern, Jack Feller and Gary Felien are unlikely to support the ban, according to Wood.

“It’s like a chain letter that we get,” Kern told U-T San Diego. “It’s meaningless.”
