Here are the top stories in Orange County today:
- Compensation is coming for those impacted by the "underwater oil pipeline that gushed thousands of gallons of crude oil into the ocean and onto Huntington beach last year." Amplify Energy agreed to settle the lawsuit over the ruptured pipeline for $50 million. The oil spill killed marine life, polluted fisheries and sent gobs of oil onto the beach. The settlement payout includes $37 million to certain fishers, $9 million to property owners, and about $7 million to the tourism industry, including whale watching companies, said Wylie Aitken, lead lawyer for the plaintiffs. - Check out the Newport Beach Oktoberfest Car and Truck Show this weekend. It's not just a car show—it has a fun October festival theme. Costumes are encouraged for both kids and adults. Classic cars may be the main event, but there will also be "exotics, trucks, and more." The show will be on Oct. 22, from 8 a.m. -4 p.m. and is sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Balboa Council. - A shoutout to OC Parks! They won the 2022 EPIC Award for a Social Media Campaign. The California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) had high praise for OC Parks, which "creatively reinvented in-person programs online during the pandemic with engaging and dynamic digital content." The OC Parks' Drive-In Movie Series also won the 2022 Award of Distinction for Special or Community Event, Recurring. Check out their award-winning online content! (OC Parks via Instagram)
- Buy special early bird tickets through Oct. 19 for the annual Winter Fest OC in Costa Mesa. The event this year will be in person at the OC Fair & Event Center from Nov. 25 to Jan. 1. The fairgrounds will "be transformed into a winter wonderland" with immersive displays, oversized holiday decor, carnival-style rides, and more than one million lights. (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin)
