- San Clemente is hiring a consultant to help with disappearing beach sand. The San Clemente City Council will use $300,000 in grant money to hire the engineering company, Moffatt & Nichol, to find out "what more natural options are feasible" to save the coastline. The city said it may have to move the town’s lifeguard headquarters inland. (Subscription/OC Register)
- A shoutout to Newport Beach Philanthropists Joann and Frank Randall, who donated $5 million for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Agoura Hills. Many wild animals have become "genetically isolated" after roads and development prevented them from crossing freeways to access food, water and their natural habitat. The Agoura Hills Crossing will provide a way for mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains to connect with larger populations, wildlife officials said. Wildlife threatened include everything from mountain lions and bobcats to birds and lizards, wildlife officials said. (City News Service)
- A 44-year-old Los Angeles man died after jumping off the Huntington Beach Pier, authorities said. A 36-year-old woman who jumped off the pier with him "made it back to the shore uninjured." The man was identified by the Orange County Sheriff's Department as Fenton Dee III. Waves were six to eight feet high with a rip current, officials said, adding, "pier jumping is not allowed."
