Here are the top stories in Orange County today:
- Orange County residents are being asked "to follow preventative measures" as pediatric RSV cases and hospitalizations surge. Health officials raised the alarm on Saturday as cases are rapidly spreading. Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, county health officer and HCA's Chief Medical Officer said “RSV can severely affect young infants and children" and encouraged residents "to take precautions, especially with groups of children." See the list of steps to follow here: (Orange County Patch)
- The mayor of Santa Ana and residents say "it's time for other cities to take on the responsibility of hosting an emergency shelter" as it prepares to open a local armory for the homeless. Santa Ana officials and residents in the Delhi neighborhood said, "it is time for other cities to take on the responsibility" of hosting a winter shelter for the homeless population of Orange County. Santa Ana resident, David Rodriguez, told Eyewitness News in Spanish that reopening the armory as a shelter "was concerning." In a park next to the Armory, Rodriguez said "he caught his children just as they were getting ready to pick up syringes and other drug paraphernalia off the ground." (KABC-TV)
- A "Little Arabia" celebration was held Friday in an area of Brookhurst Street that is now an official district in Anaheim. Anaheim officials approved the designation of an area that has "dozens of Arab and Middle East/North African businesses" as Little Arabia in August after years of lobbying by "business owners, residents and the Arab American Civic Council." Supporters gathered for music performances and celebrated the decision. (Orange County Register)
Patch deal of the day:
Good knives make all the difference in the kitchen, but you don’t need to overpay for them. Seido Japanese knives are made with strong high-carbon stainless steel (high-carbon knives are more durable and usually more expensive) and have an acute 15-degree angle for a noticeably sharper cutting face (most Western-style knives have edge angles of 25 degrees). For a limited time, Patch readers can get a 5-piece Seido Japanese master knife set for 71 percent off. At just under $70, this chef-quality set is perfect for any home cook and would also make a great gift for the holidays.
