Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

  1. Coastal advocates decried a permit allowing repairs of the Pedro Bay Pipeline by the Army Corps of Engineers after the massive oil spill in 2021. The aging 40-year old pipeline rupture was "one of the largest in California," and covered more than 8,000 acres, killing fish, marine life and sea birds. The massive spill contaminated Huntington Beach and nearby beaches with "gobs of oil." Environment advocates added, "We need to quickly phase out all dangerous, failing offshore oil infrastructure, not issue more permits that invite the next disaster.” Adding, it's time to phase out "this abusive cycle of drill, spill, repeat. (Times of San Diego)
  2. A second bat has tested positive for rabies in Orange County, and residents are "urged to use caution." The Orange County Health Care Agency said the bat was found Thursday outside the main lobby of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Building on Alton Parkway in Irvine. Anyone who may have come in contact with the bat, or who saw anyone having contact with the bat, is asked to contact the HCA Health Care Agency's Communicable Disease Control Division at 714-834-8180 "to determine the risk for rabies." Pet owners of pets who may have had contact with the bat should call their veterinarian. Rabies is almost always fatal for people who begin showing signs and symptoms of rabies, health officials said. (Orange County Patch)
  3. Woosh! Did you see the Pacific Airshow this weekend? Crowds gathered on the Orange County coast witness "thrilling stunts" and "unique aircraft" in an overhead sky show this past weekend . F-16 pilots flew at the lightning fast speed of 700 mph, "which is more than 'Maverick.'” The Pacific Airshow was in Huntington Beach from Friday through Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (KTLA Los Angeles)
