Here are the top stories in Orange County today:

  1. Lights out? SoCal Edison warned of possible temporary power shutoffs in Orange, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. In high risk areas, the power company may have to shut off power in high ink areas Sunday and Monday to prevent wildfires, officials said. With hot Santa Ana winds up to 50 m.p.h. and dy brush, the fire risk is high. The alert is from Sunday, Oct. 23, at 9 p.m. through noon on Monday, Oct. 24. "Customers can put their address into an interactive map to check if their residence is impacted. (San Bernardino County Sun)
  2. Gas prices fell again in Orange and Los Angeles counties for the 17th day in a row. In Orange County, the average price of gas dropped by "5.5 cents to $5.698." Marie Montgomery, a public relations specialist with the Automobile Club of Southern California, told City News Service, that gas prices are expected to fall "at least until average prices reach the level they were at in early September."(KABC-TV)
  3. Six birds have tested positive for the deadly bird flu. The avian bird flu virus is "very contagious among birds," warned Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, Orange County's health officer and chief medical officer. It can also kill domestic turkeys, ducks, and chickens, she added. The risk of transmission to people is low, Chino-Kwon noted, but O.C. residents should: "avoid contact with wild birds, even if they don't look sick. avoid surfaces that appear contaminated with saliva or feces from wild or domestic birds, keep dogs and other pets away from wild birds, and if you become ill after unprotected exposure to a sick or dead bird contact your health care provider so you can be evaluated." 4. Remember the fast moving 2020 Silverado wildfire? On Thursday, the state forestry department sued SoCal Edison and T-Mobile for the blaze. The lawsuit alleges that "negligence and failing to properly design, install and maintain their equipment" sent sparks into dry brush and 80-m.p.h. hot Santa Ana winds, starting the fire. The fast moving blaze damaged 16 buildings, displaced 90,000 Southern California residents, and critically injured two Orange County Fire Authority firefighters, officials said. (Finger Lakes Times)
