- Did you know that California has some of the Best Foodie Cities in the U.S. in 2022 according to the WalletHub? WalletHub compared affordable options with the best donuts and crispy tacos around. - Checks are in the mail for 20 million California residents thanks to the Middle Class Tax Refund, also called inflation relief payments. Checks of up to $1,050 are being sent directly to California residents starting Friday. "State legislators approved the plan to send direct payments to an estimated 23 million Californians back in June." In order to receive a check, you must have: Been a California resident for most of 2020 and are a resident now; Filed your 2020 taxes by Oct. 15, 2021; Made less than $250,001 in 2020 as an individual or less than $500,001 as a joint filer. - A drunk driver has been sentenced in a fatal street racing crash that killed a longtime OC Register editor. The repeat drunk driver was sentenced to 15 years to life on Friday for a fatal crash in July 2020 in Santa Ana. A BMW driven by Louie Robert Villa was street racing next and Ricardo Tolento Navarro at the intersection of 17th Street and Bristol Street in Santa Ana around 11:40 a.m. in July when Villa crashed into a pickup driven by OC Register editor Gene Harbrecht, who was killed in the crash.
