  1. Powerful waves moved railroad tracks in south San Clemente, after a recent large storm surge — and it's not the first time. A storm surge with huge ocean waves that had enough force to move the tracks hit the same area on Friday, Sept. 9, when Tropical Storm Kay hit Southern California. Metrolink responded by placing "about 1,645 tons of large boulders" to stabilize the tracks shore in San Clemente. "More rocks will likely be placed along the right-of-way through Oct. 2, " transportation officials said. Also vulnerable to storm surges are Capistrano Beach in Dana Point and Doheny State Beach near the southern parking lot. (Subscription/OC Register)
  2. Speaking of waves, another heat wave is settling over Southern California early this week. Heat warnings were issued again starting Monday, and an "excessive heat warning" was issued for the Inland Empire and inland Orange County through 8 p.m. Wednesday, forecasters said. How hot will it get? High temperatures across the Inland Empire are expected to range from 97-105 degrees before a slight cool-down Thursday through Saturday. (California Patch)
  3. Thousands of people had the Pacific Coast Highway "all to themselves" for the Surf City 10. The road was closed to traffic while participants finished the annual Huntington Beach 10k run/walk event. The Surf City 10 had not been held since the start of the pandemic. This year was the event's 66th anniversary. Organizers said the it's the oldest race in Orange County. Director of Event Operations Natalia Mendez said of the Surf City 10’s return this year,“This is about community and coming together.” (OC Register)
