Pacifica Sounds Off on Asiana Lawsuit Against KTVU

The airlines has since scrapped its plans to sue KTVU.

The Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crash in SFO has been on the minds of many but recent incidents, including an on-air gaffe by a local television station and subsequent threat of a lawsuit by the airline have Pacifica residents heated.

Asiana Airlines confirmed Monday that it would sue KTVU for incorrectly naming the pilots in the crash that killed three people.

We asked our readers this:

Asiana Airlines is suing KTVU over offensive, and fake, pilot names read on air July 12. Do you think this is the right move for Asiana? Or is there a better way to handle this? Suggestions?

This is what Pacifica had to say:

  • Wendie: There trying to distract people from the real issue.. It was a mistake and not meant to dishonor the crew... PALEASE lol
  • Steve: They'll have to prove it was deliberate and with full knowledge that they knew the names were fake and that the program director in not a complete idiot, which he/she must be. I'm not an attorney, but I have one buried in my backyard.
  • Colm: Since KTVU did confirm the names directly with NTSB before airing it, KTVU is in the clear. Asiana AL is clearly trying to muddy the waters with their already horrible public relations response, including those reported by the involved families.
  • Anthony: The easiest solution for Asiana, is quit landing planes short of the runway. Then, you won't be the news.
  • Loring: I think it's time we start holding our "news" outlets to a higher standard. Really tired of the old "gotta be first" mentality which takes precedence over being factual. Sure, maybe the NTSB gave them the names, but seriously - how could they think those were actual names?
  • Jessica: If the tabloids can get away with what they "report" why can't a news station make a mistake (which they whole heartedly apologized for) and not have to suffer.. they should be suing the stupid intern that reported the names in the first place.. people just looking for a payout..
  • Mark: No - they should be sued. Unforgivable lack of professionalism - typical of today's media.
  • Gary: It was, pretty messed up.
  • Elizabeth: Yeah, 'cause money makes you feel better...
    Right?
  • Nancy: Asiana is clearly looking to deflect some of the negative publicity. This makes them look worse.

According to Reuters, the airline announced Wednesday that it would drop the lawsuit.

"Asiana Airlines has decided not to proceed with the case since KTVU has issued a formal apology and in order for us to focus all our efforts on managing the aftermath of the accident," the South Korean company said in a statement.
