Person Dies After Falling From Bay Area Cliff

The person died only hours after someone was saved from an overturned car hanging over the edge.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — A person died Thursday night after they fell from a cliff at Devil's Slide not long after rescuers saved someone from a Tesla that nearly fell over the edge, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Department.

At around 7:45 p.m., police said they shut down Highway 1 just south of Pacifica while medical personnel and officers responded to the reported fall. Police have not released the identity of the person who slid off the cliff. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident is under investigation, the SMC Sheriff's Office said.

Hours before, the driver of an overturned Tesla was saved after it was reported their car had overturned and they were teetering over the edge of the cliff, police said.

The driver was pulled through the back window to safety, according to police.

The roadway is reopened.
