Rustic Creek Was Saved Because of an Environmental Film
Half a century ago, a group of talented Rustic Creek residents pooled their talents to save their creek.
Several decades ago, a talented group of Palisadians made a movie that saved Rustic Creek. Save Our Stream convinced the LA Board of Supervisors to reject a proposal to line the creek with concrete as part of its flood-risk reduction efforts.
Created by Rustic Creek residents who were also entertainment industry luminaries, this early example of environmental activism starred James Whitmore and Piper Laurie. Behind the camera, A-listers included Oscar-nominated producer Sy Gomberg and director Jerry Paris (later known for directing Happy Days). But, even after the five(ish) minute-long film was unearthed in 2020, it wasn’t accessible to most people. Thankfully, the guardians of 90272 history, the Pacific Palisades Historical Society, digitized the 16mm film and made it available on their free YouTube Channel.
