PALM DESERT, CA — One person was killed and another person was arrested after a crash in Palm Desert Saturday.

The crash was reported at 12:37 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound Sonny Bono Memorial (10) Freeway near Washington Street, Officer Perez of the California Highway Patrol told City News Service.

Perez said a Toyota Camry crashed with a double big-rig while they were both traveling eastbound on I-10, causing the Toyota to block one of the freeway lanes.

Around the same time, CHP officers were responding to a different crash on eastbound I-10 and avoided crashing into the Toyota. However, another vehicle close behind the CHP unit was not able to maneuver around it and crashed into the Toyota.

That vehicle was occupied by a 24-year-old man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the Toyota was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and murder, according to Perez, but no additional information was available regarding his identity.

It was unclear if the occupant of the big-rig suffered any injuries.
