3 Arrested In RivCo, Stolen Property, Red-Tailed Hawks Recovered

Stolen hawks were kept in substandard conditions and were being fed an unhealthy diet of hot dogs and lunch meat, authorities said.

COACHELLA, CA — One of three men arrested when authorities served search warrants at a home in Coachella and recovered stolen property, ghost guns and three red-tailed hawks, remained in custody Friday evening.

Deputies and California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers served the warrants Wednesday at a home in the 50000 block of Goya Drive, near the intersection of Dillon Road and Vista Del Norte, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities found two unregistered handguns, approximately 300 rounds of ammunition, a stolen Honda ATV, two stolen trailers, a stolen Ford F-750 water truck, a trencher stolen from a nearby Home Depot, a stolen toy hauler, stolen John Deere gator utility vehicle and the predatory birds, the sheriff's department said.

The hawks were kept in substandard conditions and were being fed an unhealthy diet of hot dogs and lunch meat, according to the department, adding a normal diet for the birds consists of rodents, including mice and rats.

The predatory animals were taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility for evaluation and possible release back into the wild, the department said.

Deputies arrested Eduardo Panteleon, Sr., 48, and his 18-year-old son Eduardo Pantaleon Jr., and Andrew Ochoa, 41, all from Coachella. All three were booked at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio.

The elder Pantaleon was cited and released. The younger Pantaleon was released on bail and Ochoa remained jailed.

All three are scheduled to appear in court in October.
