Bill Meyers, co-owner and driver for Yellow Cab of the Desert, has been recognized by SunLine Transit Agency of Thousand Palms for 30 years of outstanding taxicab service in the Coachella Valley.
"We are pleased to recognize Bill Meyers with this 30 year SRA Anniversary Service Award, it comes well-deserved," Michael Jones, SRA Taxi Administrator for SunLine Transit Agency said in a recent announcement. "He was at the inception of the taxicab industry in the Coachella Valley, and continues to shape the community through his efforts and experience as a co-owner of Yellow Cab of the Desert."
Meyers is responsible for perhaps one of the most crucial taxi achievements in the Coachella Valley, a SunLine Regulatory Administration representative said in the announcement.
"He single-handedly over-turned an agreement for exclusivity at the Palm Springs Airport during a Palm Springs City Council Meeting with Sonny Bono," the SRA rep said. "His efforts allowed all taxicab companies to work at the airport."
According to the SunLine Regulatory Administration, Meyers moved to the Coachella Valley in 1978, and five years later formed A Valley Cab with his father and uncle, starting with a fleet of just two sedans. The company evolved into A Valley CABousine, which introduced an advanced tech dispatch system and added 14 more vehicles.
In 2009, the company merged with four other taxicab companies to form Yellow Cab Co. of the Desert, Inc.
Meyers lives in La Quinta with his wife of 34 years, and spends his free time coaching football, his true passion.
Yellow Cab Co. of the Desert Inc. is billed as a luxury taxi service. The company has a fleet of more than 50 vehicles, including a seven-passenger van.
