BREAKING: Brush Fire Erupts In Mecca; Dozens of Acres Burned

A vegetation fire broke out Friday afternoon in Mecca near the scene of a 564-acre blaze that took nearly a week to put out.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA -- A vegetation fire broke out this afternoon in Mecca, near the scene of a 564-acre blaze that took six days to extinguish.

The fire was reported at 1:50 p.m. in the vicinity of Lincoln Street and Avenue 70 and quickly blackened two acres, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Within two hours, the fire had grown to 30 acres.

About 40 firefighters were battling the blaze. No injuries had been reported as of 4:30 p.m. and there was no immediate word on the cause of the fire.

The previous fire began last Friday near Avenue 68 and Lincoln Street, triggering the temporary evacuation of some homes, and was fully contained about 6 p.m. Wednesday. Progress on getting a handle on that fire was slow ``due to depth of the mulch piles involved and heavy fuels,'' county fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said.

This is a breaking news story and will be periodically updated as more information becomes available.
