Council Approves Funding For Live Streaming, Broadcast Of Meetings

Councilwoman Jan Harnik says broadcasting the meetings will help increase community engagement.

The Palm Desert City Council allocated $40,000 Thursday to purchase up to four video cameras that would allow the city to broadcast its meetings.

The council approved the funds in a 5-0 vote durings its Thursday meeting.

“It’s important for the council. It’s important for the community. Of course, it provides even greater transparency,'' Harnik said. "It’s an opportunity to engage the community in what is really going on."

She said that some residents work and can not make it to the 4 p.m. meeting. Harnik also believes it will allow older residents who are shut-in to have access to their local government.

“They are unable to leave their homes for a myriad of years. That doesn’t make them not valuable for their community,’’ she said.

The council also approved allocating more than $42,000 for the city's Independence Day celebration.

Councilmembers will consider approving a $35,000 contract with Rialto-based Pyro Spectaculars by Souza for a fireworks show.

The council will also likely approve a $7,500 contract with the Corona-based Side Street Strutters for live jazz entertainment.
